McLaren’s First Manual Supercar in 34 Years Is the McL 6GT

McLaren has unveiled the McL 6GT during Monterey Car Week, introducing a carbon-bodied V8 supercar concept that brings back a true manual transmission to the brand after a 34-year absence.
The McL 6GT is the first manual McLaren since the McLaren F1 arrived in 1992. The concept is inspired by Bruce McLaren’s unfinished M6GT road-car project from the late 1960s and is designed to emphasize driver involvement and an immersive driving experience.
V8 Power and Manual Transmission
The McL 6GT combines a V8 combustion engine with a proper manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Unlike Ferrari’s recently introduced gated-style DCT setup, McLaren’s concept uses a genuine manual gearbox.
The car also features hydraulic steering, a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque and carbon-fiber bodywork. McLaren has not yet disclosed the vehicle’s power, performance or weight figures.
Design Inspired by the M6GT
The McL 6GT’s design differs significantly from McLaren’s current supercar lineup. It features a low and wide body, a distinctive low-slung nose, clean surfaces and a chopped Kamm-style rear.
The roof flows into the engine cover and wraps around the sides, reflecting design elements associated with Bruce McLaren’s original M6GT project and other classic supercars.
The concept also incorporates several details connected to McLaren’s heritage. Bruce McLaren’s signature appears in the engine bay, while the original Speedy Kiwi emblem is featured on the fuel filler cap. The gearstick includes a three-dimensional Kiwi design.
Inside, the cabin features machined aluminum controls, exposed carbon fiber and quilting influenced by the original M6GT.
Production Confirmed for 2028
McLaren currently describes the McL 6GT as a concept, but the company has confirmed that a production version is planned for 2028.
The production model will sit beyond McLaren’s core portfolio and will retain the manual transmission, creating a new, highly exclusive branch of the company’s supercar range.
